History of the PCUSA Since the 1983 Reunion - APA Certification Level II 5 hours

This four part presentation occurred on one day during the APA National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.  One of the Association's required Level II classes, it addressed all of the suggested topics listed in the APA Certification Handbook for 2011. 

Part 1 ... set the context - Acts 2 to '82 in a brief survey of the church from its beginnings.  Then it reviews PCUSA splits and re-joins in the run-up to the Reunion ... launch and save* ...

Part 2 ... detailed the 120 year run-up from the Civil War split into the 'northern strand' and 'southern strand' churches through the union presbytery experience to the 1983 Reunion -- and the reorganizational actions and denominational history from then to date.  ... launch and read* ...

Part 3 ... examines the church from an organizational polity perspective - reviewing the structure of today's PCUSA (using the First Presbyterian Church, Las Vegas, the Presbytery of Nevada, the Synod of the Pacific, and the 2010 General Assembly as examples) with emphasis on the denominational offices of specific importance to the Administrative Professionals ... launch and read* ...

Part 4 Concludes this series and addresses current trends in the PCUSA, explores possible futures and strategies for the church, and details the biggest administrative challenge since the Reunion - the absorption of the 'newFOG' reorganization of the Book of order - and what church entities need to do now about the changes made effective in July by the affirmative vote of the Presbyteries over this last year ... launch and read* ...

Equipping First Presbyterian Church, Las Vegas Spirit Lifters - in five parts, September - October, 2011 

This five part series was presented to the Spirit Lifters class on successive Sunday mornings to review the History of the Presbyterian Church in the USA - ending with a review of current denominational issues.  The material was repurposed and expanded to the needs of the APA four-part presentation above.

Part 1 ... set the context - Acts 2 to '82 in a brief survey of the church from its beginnings.  The focus is on the American Presbyterian experience -- the 'northern church' splits and rejoins up to the present ... launch and read* ...

Part 2 ... addresses organizational polity - the present day structure of the PCUSA (using the First Presbyterian Church, Las Vegas, the Presbytery of Nevada, the Synod of the Pacific, and the 2010 General Assembly as examples) and issues within the PCUSA ... launch and read* ...

Part 3 ... reviews the history of the PCUSA in the context of the sweep of American religious history, reviews the splits and re-joins as they run-up to reunion, and examines "What has the Reunion done for us - and to us?" ... launch and read* ...

Part 4 ... asks "What is a Presbyterian?" and addresses the distinctive beliefs and worship practices.  it also reviews the purpose of the church and its Book of Confessions ... launch and read* ...

Part 5 concludes this series.  It reviews the history of the PCUSA's polity and what influenced its development, tours the Book of Order (including the 'newFOG'), and explores current trends implying possible futures and strategies for the church and its members ... launch and read* ...
